Donnelly G.P. Vanier 2020 graduate Emma Isert has received the Governor General’s Academic Medal.

Isert received the award that is presented to the graduating student with the highest grade point average in each school in Canada.

She was surprised when she received the medal in early October from the school.

“I wasn’t notified about the Governor General award until my brother Dwayne brought it home from school,” Isert says.

She also received a $500 cheque in the mail to support future studies.

Isert received Distinction Awards for Social Studies 30, English 30, Art 20 and Art 30.

She also earned Merit Awards for English 30, Math 30, Chemistry 30, Social Studies 30, Art 20 and Art 30.

The class valedictorian is taking a year off studies to consider her future.

“Some of my options for next year are beginning my studies to get my Masters in Social Work in order to become a counsellor or to complete a diploma in order to become a pharmacy technician,” Isert says.

The medal is usually presented during graduation ceremonies.

However, Vanier is one of many schools unable to hold official traditional graduation ceremonies under restrictions in the coronavirus pandemic.
