The weather was cold and dreary, but this didn’t stop people from participating in the Terry Fox Run in McLennan on Sept. 16.

Organized by Kristen Blanchette, 15 people participated in the event, walking, running or biking throughout the community. She provided ribbons and stickers about Terry Fox to the participants.

One sticker read, “Terry ran for me. I’m running for …” with the name of the person the participant was running for.

Francis Lessard, Kristen Blanchette’s father, was the organizer of the McLennan event for many years. Lessard’s mother, Violet Lessard, died of cancer and he admires Terry Fox to this day.

“He was a selfless person,” says Lessard. “It’s good to see participation.”

Leo Giroux and his family went for the 10 km trek as their participation in the McLennan event.

Giroux wants his children to understand and appreciate what Terry Fox did.

“It’s important for our kids to learn about his legacy,” says Giroux.

All proceeds from this event will go to the Terry Fox Foundation. Look for stories about the schools’ participation in their Terry Fox Runs in the Express later.

Terry Fox attempted his run across Canada in 1980.
