SRMHA Midgets lose to Sexmith Vipers in game two of provincial playoffs

The SRMHA Midgets struggled to keep pace with the Sexmith Vipers in the first period.

The Smoky River Minor Hockey Association’s midget team faced the Sexsmith Vipers at home in the evening of Feb. 1.

The local team faced a formidable opponent in the first period, as the Vipers came on strong with forechecking and attacks on their.

Joshua Fischer scored an unassisted goal for the Midgets at 3:43.

At 6:05, Riley Mercredi-Dougall put the Vipers on the board with assistance by Tyren Shpak.

The first period ended in a 1-1 tie.

Jordan Sylvain scored the Midgets’ second goal at 8:31, with assistance by Kelly Dion and Eli Hodgson.

But Damien Mills evened the score for the Vipers again at 15:18, with Eric Pauls receiving the assist.

The second period ended in a 2-2 tie.

It was the Vipers who would dominate the third period, scoring two additional goals.

Tyren Shpak scored an unassisted goal at 15:39. Then Riley Goertzen scored the team’s fourth goal at 10:31, with assistance by Damien Mills.

Near the 15-minute mark of play, Carter Johnson of the Vipers got into a fight with a SRMHA player. As officials were trying to restain Johnson, he hit one of them.

Johnson was sent to the dressing room and he received a four-minute penalty for high sticking, as well as a game misconduct.

In the last three minutes of play, and with one Vipers’ player in the penalty box, the Midgets pulled their goalie and put a sixth attacker on the ice.

Several times, the Midgets came close to scoring, but it was to no avail. The Vipers held on to win the game by a score of 4-2.

In the third period, officials restrained Carter Johnson of the Vipers after he started fighting with a SRMHA player. In that fight, he also hit an official. Johnson was sent to the dressing room and he received a four-minute penalty for high sticking, as well as a game misconduct.
