On April 29, 30 and May 1, dancers from Smoky River Dance Society participated in the Standing Ovation 20th anniversary dance festival in Dawson Creek.
There were a total of five groups and two soloists that participated in this festival. This is the largest number of dancers SRDS has sent to Standing Ovation.
For many of these dancers, it was their first experience dancing in a festival this size. The dancers had amazing support and dedication from instructors, Alysia Sharpe – ballet and Brogan Severson – Jazz, modern and musical theater. The weekend started off with a bang when the Modern group-Kaitlyn Langelier, Madeleine Jordan, Meagan McNeil, Janan Sutton and Jessie Sylvain, obtained a gold medal standing for their piece, ‘Control’ in the beginner modern category.
Intermediate Jazz 2 –Kacie Labrecque, Brooke Lambert, Paige Fournier, Keira Doran, Kylee St. Jean, Jaydyn Bedard, Jenna McNeil, Sarah Brown, Mariah Fiddick and Kaitlyn St. Laurent, obtained a silver standing in the novice jazz group for their piece, ‘Italiano Mambo’. Soloists, Holly Russett and Kacie Labrecque obtained silver standing in the novice jazz for their pieces. This was Holly’s first solo and Kacie’s third. Both dancers did very well on stage.
Next came the ballet groups who both participated in the novice classical ballet. ‘Dance Shoes’ performed by the 7-8 year old group-Addison Wickman, Mila Roy, Alison Turcotte, Brenna Garant, Taylor Veraart and Sienna St. Jean, obtained a gold standing. While ‘Winter’ performed by the 9+ ballet group- Zoe Roy, Aeva Portelance, Kacie Labrecque and Kaitlyn St. Laurent, obtained a silver standing. Soloist, Kacie Labrecque performed in the classical ballet solo novice category obtaining silver for her piece ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’.
Last but not least was the musical theatre group-Dominic Sliger, Kacie Labrecque, Isabelle Thibault, Zoe Roy, Daysha Tokarz, Mia Maisonneuve, who performed a piece from Sseussical the musical called ‘Oh the Things you can Think’.
The group obtained a high silver standing and where the only group to sing during their performance. This festival finished off the dance season for 2015-2016. There will be an early registration in conjunction with minor hockey on Monday June 13 from 4-8pm at the Falher Arena.
For the 2016-17 season SRDS is hoping to offer Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, Creative Movement, Mob and are working tirelessly to offer and All-Boyz Dance Class.
