The SRMHA Pirates Peewee team had good luck during the weekend of Feb. 3-4, winning against the Clearview Colts from B.C. first, then against the Grande Prairie Knights, an all-girls team.
The Pirates hosted the Clearview Colts at the Falher Regional Recreation Complex on Feb. 3. The Pirates scored two power play goals right out of the starting gate.
Alix Maisonneuve put the puck in the attic at 4:27, with Jude Sylvain and Aidan Hicks. Then Maisonneuve scored his second of the game at 18:23, and he was unassisted. The game was 2-0 in favour of the Pirates at the end of the first period.
The Pirates had numerous scoring opportunities in the second period, but they couldn’t seal the deal.
Nor did the Colts score any goals, and the game remained 2-0 for the Pirates at the end of the second period.
However, just 55 seconds into the third period, Aidan Hicks scored the Pirates’ third goal, also on the power play and he was unassisted. Check the Smoky River Express’ Facebook page for a video of the goal.
Kerry Larson put the Colts on the board at 1:16 with an unassisted goal. Just over five minutes later, Denis Bouchard scored the Pirates’ fourth goal with assistance by Rudolf Adrian Smit.
However, the Colts had the last word, as Nicholas Kimmie scored the team’s second and final goal at 15:12, with assistance from Coy Clarke. Check the Express’ Facebook page for a video of this goal as well.
The Pirates won the game by a score of 4-2.
The Grande Prairie Knights come to McLennan
The SMRHA Pirates faced the all-girls team of the Grande Prairie Knights at the H.W. Fish Arena in the afternoon of Feb. 4. Both teams played their hardest, but it was the Pirates who won the game 7-2.
Rudolf Adrian Smit opened the scoring for the Pirates at 6:20 in the first period, putting the puck in the basement unassisted. At 12:35, Aidan Hicks scored the team’s second goal, putting the puck in from the side, with assistance from Alix Maisonneuve and Cameron Delaurier.
Karsyn Utz put the Knights on the board at 13:16, with Faye Neniska assisting.
The first period ended 2-1 in the Pirates’ favour.
The Pirates continued to lead the game in the second period. Aidan Hicks put the puck in the attic on a power play opportunity, with assistance from Jude Sylvain.
Sylvain followed up with his own goal at 15:59, while Cole Fournier and Hicks assisted on the play.
But Alyssa Buss gave the Knights their second goal of the game at 17:13, firing the puck into the attic and she was unassisted.
The second period ended 4-2 in favour of the Pirates.
The Pirates finished the game with three more goals. Jude Sylvain scored his second goal of the game a 2:51, Fournier and Hicks assisting.

At 8:10, Hicks scored the team’s sixth goal and Delaurier shared the spotlight with him.
Seamus Born scored the seventh and final goal at 14:14, and Delaurier collected another assist.
