Smoky River Emergency Services has a new UTV to handle remote and wildland emergencies.

“It gives us the capability to fight fires in tough areas and it also gives us the means for off-road rescue,” says Fire Chief Marcel Maure.

The fire department purchased a Polaris XP Ranger side-by-side from Stojan’s Power Sports & Marine in Grande Prairie, for $16,500.

The fire chief obtained a $15,000 grant from Richardson Pioneer Ltd. The M.D. council approved the purchase during their meeting on July 6 and added $1,500 from the fire department’s budget for the purchase.

The UTV will be fitted with a stretcher unit and a small pumper package, then firefighters will start training with it.

The fire department holds training throughout the year and there are several stories in this week’s edition.
