Minor soccer season in Peace River have been given the boot.

Peace River Minor Soccer Association board made the decision April 28.

“Our board met and voted to cancel the 2021 outdoor season,” president Laura Grainger says in an email April 29.

“Several factors impacted our decision, including the lack of registration revenue to offset our costs, the lack of volunteers, as well as the rising case numbers of COVID-19 and difficulty to accurately adhere to all Alberta Health Services guidelines and restrictions.”

No games were allowed under restrictions.

The association was determined to return to training after the 2020 season was cancelled over COVID-19 restrictions.

“Unfortunately, the efforts we put in were just not enough to get us rolling,” Grainger says.

More volunteers were needed to meet COVID restrictions. About 10 volunteers signed up but the association needed at least 50 volunteers for the season to begin.

Interest in the gameless season was also low, according to a survey by the association.

“Our survey has generated only about 30 responses, half of which responded they are not interested in volunteering,” Grainger says in the email April 16.

Just 35 players registered by April 23.

The season was tentatively set to run from May 11 to June 24.
