Alberta Agriculture and Forestry Minister Oneil Carlier has denied a request to designate genetically engineered alfalfa as a prohibited noxious weed.
Normand Boulet, the ag fieldman for the M.D. of Smoky River No. 130, highlighted this issue during the council meeting on May 9.
Since last year, the M.D. of Smoky River No. 130 and other municipal governments within the Peace Country have been lobbying the provincial government to make this designation under the Weed Control Act. So now, they will be meeting to discuss their next steps.
In other news, the M.D. has hired for all positions except one, the spray truck operator. The other staff started on May 7 and the vacant position is still being advertised.
Also, there are 10,000 seedlings waiting distribution under the M.D.’s shelter belt program. The date for distribution will be announced.
