While it is next year that Canada celebrates its 150 anniversary some initiatives are already underway, waiting to blossom in time to mark the occasion.

While planting commemorative tulip bulbs in her own garden in McLennan, Monica Bisley decided it would also be a good idea to plant the bulbs around the flagpole situated between the Archdiocese House and St. John the Baptist Church.

She also thought that it would be helpful to get Ecole Providence Grade 5 and 6 students involved in the planting and principal Krista Veitch and the students were all enthusiastic to participate.

With Bisley’s assistance, the kids planted approximately 100 bulbs.

“I thought it was a great idea when Monica suggested it and the kids were really excited,” says Ecole Providence Principal Krista Veitch. “It was a great exercise in citizenship, beautifying the community, doing something in celebration of Canada’s 150 Anniversary.
“It’s not the kind of activity that offers instant gratification but they seemed to like the idea that something they did today will have results next year. So much so, that they want to plant bulbs at the school also.”

The 150 anniversary tulip bulbs are available exclusively through Home Hardware and are bred to produce red and white blossoms in keeping with Canadian colours.
