Peace River council approves utility, solid waste increases

During their meeting on January 28, council for the Town of Peace River approved two bylaws for service fee increases.
The first, Bylaw 2041, increases the utility rate from $4.98 to $5.40 per cubic metre.
The second, Bylaw 2042, increases the solid waste fee from $15 to $17 per month.
Both increases are effective February 16, but council emphasizes there will be no impact to property taxes.

New business – requests for decision

Grants to organizations
Council approved Alberta Pond Hockey’s request for $5,000 request to host the 2019 Alberta Pond Hockey Championships, which will be held in the Peace Region during March 8-10.
Council also approved the Peace River Winter Swim Club’s request for $1,870.45, as well as the following:
. North Peace Performing Arts Festival, $1,500 (turning down their original request of $5,000).
. Mighty Peace Hill Climb, $2,500.
. St. Isidore Winter Carnaval, $1,000.

Fire Department Awards Ceremony
Council approved its members to attend this event, which will be held at the Chateau Nova in Peace River, beginning at 6 p.m. on February 16.
Council members will also attend the Rotary Gala event, which will be held at the same location on April 13.

Flags for council chambers and peace pipe ceremony
Treaty 8 and Metis Nation flags will be installed in council chambers and a pipe ceremony will take place to commemorate their installation.

CPTED Workshop Funding
Council approved funding up to $2,500 to host workshops for Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. Councillor Orren Ford is leading this effort.
