Teacher orientation changes
Orientation for new staff at Northland schools is changing.
New teachers will participate in orientation located in their school communities instead of in a central location.
Meanwhile, a centralized orientation for new principals will take place on Aug. 25.
Board cuts meeting to save money
The number of board meetings is changing.
Northland approved holding nine meetings a year instead of ten. As a result, the Aug. 21 meeting has been eliminated.
The decision will reduce board and administration costs.
Water testing recommended
Northland received a letter from Alberta Health Services recommending the water in schools be tested for lead content.
As a result, the Occupational Health and Safety Officer is sampling water at schools in January and February.
Reasons for absent students cited
Director of Student Engagement, Attendance and Completion Don Tessier provided an update to the trustees on addressing strategies regarding attendance.
In addition, to help the board understand why students, identified as chronically absent, are missing school, principals submitted reasons. The top reasons identified for October 2018-19 are sickness/medical and skipping.
Northland’s overall attendance for December 2019 was 78 per cent, which is down two per cent from December 2018. The target is 82.4 per cent.
