Some good financial news has come for the Village of Girouxville.
The Girouxville Enhancement Committee will receive $125,000 towards the construction of a new outdoor rink, pleasing President Alex Brochu.
“We are very, very grateful to the communities for the support that they have been giving us,” says Brochu. “They have been very supportive throughout all of our fundraisers. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”
Brochu and several others attended the Girouxville council meeting on April 16 to discuss the project.
The Girouxville Enhancement Committee will receive the money under the provincial government’s Community Facility Enhancement Program. Their target is to raise a total of $250,000 for the project, based on similar projects in other communities.
“Our project has always been to build the concrete pad, redo some of the boards and to have this skating rink used as a year-round facility,” says Brochu.
“During the spring, summer and fall, people will be able to use the facility because there will be a concrete pad. We will also be installing basketball nets and other sporting netting or equipment.”
The Girouxville Enhancement Committee has been fundraising for a new outdoor rink for three and-a-half years.
Concerning the municipality’s role in the project, CAO Estelle Girard says the project manager will draw up a new budget and bring it to council’s budget meeting. If council approves the project, then construction will commence.
The work would be done at the same time as the road resurfacing work on 48th Street. The concrete pad for the rink would be 152 feet by 77 feet. A contract for the cement work would have to be awarded as well.
The project manager will work with the Girouxville Enhancement Committee on project completion. More updates later.
