M.D., Town of McLennan to keep physician house surplus in reserve

During their meeting on October 10, the council for the M.D. of Smoky River No. 130 agreed to keep the physician house surplus in reserve with the Town of McLennan.

Subdivision application extension granted
Council agreed to extend a subdivision application for PT SE 1-76-21-W5M, located near Guy, for one year.

Gas line installation permitted for ratepayer
Council approved a request for East Peace Gas Co-op to install a gas line for a ratepayer on Township Road 780 and Range Road 240.
It involves a reduced setback for paralleling those roads and will cross an undeveloped road allowance.

Genetically Engineered Alfalfa bylaw
Council gave first and second readings to a new bylaw that will restrict genetically engineered alfalfa within the Smoky River region.

Amended motion for application
Council has amended a motion for an application with the Invest Canada – Community Initiatives Program.
The amendment takes “canola” out and places “pulse crops” in the application, which is meant to attract international investors to the pulse crop industry. Council passed the original motion during their meeting in September.

Letter of support
Council has agreed to provide a letter of support to the Town of McLennan for their application for the Community and Regional Economic Support (CARES) and the Alberta Community Partnership grant, which is related to a regional broadband initiative.

Request for disaster recovery funding denied
The provincial government has turned down the M.D.’s request for financial assistance under its Disaster Recovery Program.
The M.D. council is appealing the decision and seeking a meeting with Municipal Affairs Minister Shaye Anderson.
