Following are notes from the M.D. of Smoky River regular council meeting Aug. 12:

Council supports FABuLAS

Council sent letters of support to the Falher and Area Beautification and Leisure Activities Society [FABuLAS] for the UFA Rural Communities Foundation [RCF] grant application and the Community Facilities Enhancement Program Grant [CFEP] application.
FABuLAS is seeking funds to repair softball diamonds in Falher.

Minimum tax levy defeated

A proposal to establish a $50 minimum tax levy for all property within the M.D. of Smoky River No. 130 was defeated by a 5-1 vote.

Council rejects request from Cargill

Council sent a letter to Cargill Ltd. to inform the company that council rejected Cargill’s request to close Range Road 202 at the CN crossing north of Highway 2.
Smoky River council has numerous concerns regarding the safety of its residents and the effect of the closure on the local economy.

Johnson appointed to represent M.D.

Ernest Johnson was appointed to represent the M.D. of Smoky River No. 130 for the Alberta Bilingual Municipalities Association.

Tender awarded for culvert work

Council awarded the installation for Bridge File 86352 and Bridge File 86353 to New Gen Projects Ltd. of Peace River at a price of $207,400 plus GST.
The bridge is located on Township Road 742.

Mutual-aid agreement approved

Council approved the mutual-aid fire agreement with Big Lakes County and the Town of High Prairie, which allows for a more cost-effective and timely response to emergency situations.
The renewed agreement continues the mutual-aid fire agreement signed in July 2009.

2020 tax sale set for Nov. 20

The M.D. of Smoky River will be holding the 2020 tax sale on Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. at the M.D. office.
The tax sale will be advertised in the South Peace News prior to the event.
