Georges P. Vanier hosted their annual junior volleyball tournament on Oct. 15, with teams coming from around the region.

The GPV Vipers boys’ team won the gold medal after defeating the Prairie River Junior High Raiders from High Prairie, in sets of 25-23 and 25-18. The Vipers won the gold medal and the Raiders received the silver medal.

Coach Pam Heckbert is pleased, given that all the players are rookies.

“There’s been a high learning curve, but they’ve been improving greatly since the beginning of the season,” says Heckbert, adding that she shopes they keep their momentum going for the rest of it.

Bob Owens coaches the girls’ team and they placed third overall in their pool. But the team will work harder for their next tournaments, he adds.

There were three pools of competition and the games were played in the gyms at GPV and Ecole Heritage.

The girls black pool was played at Ecole Heritage and the teams consisted of the Glenmary Saints, PRJH Raiders, Roland Michener Rams and Quatre-Vents.

The boys pool was played at Ecole Heritage as well, consisting of the GPV Vipers, a combined Ecole Lynx/Quatre-Vents team, the Kinuso Knights and PRJH Raiders.

The girls teal pool was played at GPV, consisting of the GPV Viupers, Bezanson Bulldogs, St. Andrew’s Saints of High Prairie and Kinuso Lady Knights.

The Glenmary Saints faced the St. Andrew’s Saints in the girls’ championship game at Ecole Heritage. The Glenmary team won the game in sets of 21-25, 25-12 and 15-9, and took the gold medal. The St. Andrew’s team received the silver medal.
