The junior boys’ volleyball team at Georges P. Vanier has won the gold medal at zones for the first time ever, and Coach Pam Heckbert is proud of her team.
“It’s amazing, those kids played well,” says Heckbert.
They and the junior girls’ team travelled to La Crete during Nov. 3-4 for the 2J zones tournament.
The boys’ team defeated La Crete in the semi-finals.
They advanced to the finals and played against T.A. Norris to win the gold medal and the banner.
The girls’ team lost in semi-final action. But they were 4-0 in round robin action and beat the La Crete in pool play.
“The girls played really well,” says Coach Parker Bonnah.
“Everything came together. They were blocking, hitting and doing all they were supposed to be doing.”
The zone tournament was the last for both junior teams for the season.
Senior high girls’ team wins gold
The junior boys’ team wasn’t the only winner, as the senior high girls’ team won the gold medal at a tournament in Boyle the same weekend.
There were seven teams (1A, 2A and 3A teams) and the Viper girls went undefeated throughout the complete round robin losing only one set.
They played three consecutive games on Saturday afternoon, the last two round robin games and the gold medal match.
“We faced the hometown Boyle team in the final and came away victorious,” says Coach Dave Morin.
“The girls were showing some fatigue in their last round robin game but put it together for the final and played a strong match to come home with their first Gold medal of the season.”
The senior high girls’ team went to the Peace Classic in Peace River during Nov. 9-10, and then they go to the 2A Zones in Valleyview during November 17-18.
