The Georges P. Vanier Vipers junior boys’ and girls’ teams were medal winners in High Prairie a couple of weekends ago.
They played in the divisional basketball tournament at Prairie River Junior High during Feb. 23-24.
The boys’ team brought home the silver medal, while the girls’ team received the bronze.
The coaches for both teams are pleased with their performance over the season.
“They all improved over the year,” says Coach Michelle Pitre for the boys’ team.
“It’s developmental ball in junior (play) and I want to get all my players on the court. They need that experience.”
The boys were excellent ambassadors of the sport, she adds.
Coach Pam Heckbert offers similar thoughts about the girls’ team.
“It was a fantastic season, the girls improved throughout and they had a lot of fun,” says Heckbert.
At the divisional basketball tournament, the boys’ team played against the PRJH Raiders in the championship game.
The Raiders won the game and the gold medal while the Vipers took silver.
The girls’ team played against the PRJH team in semi-final action. The PRJH team defeated GPV to advance to the championship game. The GPV team received the bronze medal as a result.
“We were seeded fourth and came out of that tournament finishing third,” says Heckbert.
The divisional basketball tournament was the last of the season for both teams.
But the season hasn’t ended for the senior high teams yet. Look for coverage of both teams in the near future.
