The junior and senior high badminton teams for Georges P. Vanier have lots of medals to show off, following their participation at recent tournaments.

The junior team travelled to Roland Michener School in Slave Lake on April 14 for their tournament. Thirty-two out of 39 players won medals. Coach Dan Turcotte is very pleased with their performance, especially because the school has won that event for the sixth year in a row, and also because they brought home the banner.

“Our kids rose to the task,” says Turcotte. “For the sixth year in a row, we won the banner and plaque. I’m very happy, the kids played awesome. They represented the school well.”

The medal recipients are as follows:

Bronze: Parker St. Laurent, Trisha Genuino, Taylor Chalifoux, Danielle St. Laurent, Dylan McIntosh, Treyton Anderson, Tiffany Mawoko and Jessina Goodswimmer.

Silver: Patrick Pabalan, Kiera Doran, Alex Gauthier, Karter Fournier, Tyson Tokarz, William Hauch, Emily St. Laurent, David Rebamonte, Mackenzie Parker, Brianna Willier, Christian Noelette and Ryanne Chailler.

The senior high team travelled to Hillside Junior Senior High School in Valleyview on April 14 for an invitational tournament. Coach Melodie Schaefer is pleased with her team’s performance as well

“They did really well,” says Schaefer. “It was our second tournament of the season and it went better than the first.”

She is referring to the tournament that they attended in High Prairie on March 24. The GPV team brought home the following medals from Valleyview:

. Catherine Brochu and Taylor Benoit, bronze, junior girls’ doubles.

. Shayna Yaremko, silver, intermediate ladies’ singles.

. Derrick Brochu and Brook Constable, gold, mixed doubles.

Schaefer was also impressed with the 19 that schools participated in the Valleyview tournament, and the approximately 300 games played.

The junior team travelled to Hillside Junior Senior High School in Valleyview this past weekend for an invitational tournament, where Turcotte expected tough competition from other teams.

The senior team participated in a joint tournament with Ecole Heritage on the same weekend.
