Honey Festival Committee
News release
The 2016 Falher Honey Festival will include five- and 10-km fun run on Saturday, June 18.
The organizing committee announced today (May 11) that monies raised from the event would be donated toward the Fort McMurray relief effort.
The committee originally intended that the money raised from the event would be directed toward raising mental health and wellness in the local area. Race director Al Singer stated:
“Given the recent events in Fort McMurray, it was a pretty simple decision to direct the proceeds from this year’s run towards assisting our neighbours in Fort Mac.”
Singer said the committee is working hard to add this event to a select group of events that runners and others see as an annual must-do in the Smoky River M.D., Peace River, Grande Prairie and High Prairie areas.
“At the same time, we know our local communities have a broad range of active people and hope to encourage their participation as representative of the kind of healthy lifestyle that supports mental health and wellness.”
Medals will be awarded for the overall top three female and male finishers in the five- and 10-km events respectively, as well as the top three female and male finishers in nine different age groups in the five- and 10-km events.
Both the five- and 10-km events will start at 9 a.m. at the Falher Regional Recreation Complex, with the packet and number pickup taking place there as well, between 8 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.
The Honey Festival has arranged for registered five- and 10-km participants to be able to partake in the pancake breakfast at the recreation centre until noon.
Registration is open until June 18, early bird is $15 ($12 for senior/youth) until May 24. Regular registration is $20 ($18 for senior/youth) until June 7. Late registration is $25 ($20 for senior/youth) until June 18. Optional T-shirts are available for order at the time of registration.
Singer said the committee wants to encourage everyone in the community to participate in this event, and to this end, has made arrangements for a 1.8 km “come for the stroll,” event concurrent with the five- and 10-km walk/run.
Participation in the 1.8 km event is by donation, by filling out the separate event registration form. We want to see everyone in the community come out and join us in these events.
Volunteers are still needed. Please call Al Singer at (780) 507-2499, or contact him via email at alsinger@telus.net.
