The evening of Feb. 28 was training night for Smoky River Fire and Rescue.

They had the opportunity to work in the frigid conditions at the northwest corner of Falher, right in the middle of the canal.

Fire Chief Marcel Maure set up a scenario that two people riding a snowmobile became injured when they “crashed” in the canal.

Nineteen firefighters were involved with the exercise. The firefighters had to take in a substantial amount of equipment.

They found the going challenging, as the canal was buried in deep snow. But after about 45 minutes or so, they were able to get the “injured” parties out of the canal.

Moving around in the canal proved a challenge for the firefighters.
