Whitecourt, Alberta – The police operation on Highway 43 has now concluded. Traffic has resumed to normal.
Earlier today, an RCMP member attempted to stop a vehicle on Highway 43. As members attempted to approach the vehicle, a confrontation occurred which lead to the discharge of members’ firearms.
The adult male suspect who was involved in this incident was later located deceased.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been notified and is investigating this incident. The process is done in accordance with their mandate to effectively, independently, and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person as well as sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
The RCMP remains the lead investigating agency on the events leading up to the serious incident, with ASIRT having carriage of the review of police actions.
BACKGROUND
July 3, 2018
Whitecourt, Alberta – RCMP members are currently on scene at Highway 43 west bound near Chickadee Creek. The area surrounding a rest area is contained in search of a suspect who fled from police. The situation is being contained and a large police presence is on scene to ensure there is no threat to public safety.
The incident is unfolding and details are preliminary in nature. There is presently extensive traffic delays on Highway 43 and the public is asked to avoid the area and use an alternate route.
