Smoky River Family and Community Support Services – In Focus

Lynn Florence
Director
Smoky River FCSS Home Support Program

It has been a year that Smoky River FCSS has offered this program! We now have 16 clients and five home support workers.

Smoky River FCSS believes that people are our most valuable resource and want to offer services to contribute to the individual and community wellbeing.

People are living longer and sometimes need assistance to remain in their communities as well as their own home.

The Smoky River Home Support Program offers supplemental care to seniors so that they may “age in the community.” This support will also be offered to other residents in Smoky River who need assistance after surgery or postnatal or who need assistance because of emotional or mental stress.

Occasional help in the home can allow community members to remain in their homes longer with a better quality of life. The focus will always centre on creating and nurturing the clients and families served by providing a care that is respectful and compassionate while recognizing the individuality of the client.

This service is designed to promote well-being in our region by providing assistance in the household, enabling ill, disabled or frail people to remain in their own homes in a safe environment.

The objectives of this program is to support our community members’ independence by assisting with light housekeeping or yard work and meal preparation. We want to assist individuals who are discharged from the hospital and require help in their home and support seniors and families when the demands are greater than the family or individual can meet. There will be a fee for these services. This fee will be determined by need and based on income.

Smoky River FCSS home support services are meant to help bridge independence, rather than substitute family obligations. It is anticipated that people will try to utilize their own resources as much as possible.
