Peace Regional RCMP lay charges in relation to homicide

RCMP News release

The RCMP has charged two individuals with one count each of second-degree murder in relation to the homicide of 69-year-old William Raymond Merrier of Cadotte Lake, after he was found deceased on Jan. 29.

An autopsy conducted at the office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton last week determined that the manner of Mr. Merrier’s death was homicide.

Chadd Cardinal, 19, of Cadotte Lake, and a youth, who cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, have been charged separately with one count of second-degree murder. Chadd Cardinal was to appear in court in Peace River on Feb. 5, 2018.

Given that this matter is now before the courts, the RCMP will not be providing additional information in relation to the present charges.

Should new details surface, they will be provided by means of an updated media release.

Grande Prairie RCMP investigate animal

cruelty complaint

On Jan. 28, the Grande Prairie RCMP received complaints of a video posted on a social media site showing the abuse of an animal.

Grande Prairie RCMP initiated an investigate and a female youth is now facing a charge under the Criminal Code of Canada.

A 14-year-old female youth from Grande Prairie, who cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is facing a charge of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal under Section 445.1(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada. The youth is to appear in Provincial Court on March 19.

The RCMP confirmed that the animal involved was not injured.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be provided.
