The ice plant has been turned on and things are starting to get chilly in the new Peace River Recreation Centre as the project nears completion.
Final work including tiling, moving in furniture, some lighting installation, staff training and more are all being done.
Outdoor rink boards will also be installed before winter.
At their latest meeting, town council heard the over $25 million project budget is currently 97% expended, with $596,000 remaining in the project contingency budget.
Sponsorships and donations are up to $50,000 in direct donations.
“Currently we’re projecting that we’ll be in a fairly favourable position by the end of the project and not having expended all the funds for that project,” said Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Jim McCuaig.
“On time and on budget,” said Councillor Colin Needham.
A field house allocation meeting was held in spring to allow interested organizations to express their interest in booking time.
“We have so many requests for field house use we’re very impressed. We’ll have a very busy facility,” Tanya Bell of Community Services said.
The new facility will be soft opening for minor hockey school August 19, and will be open to the public in September, with a grande opening event proposed to be held October 19.
The facility may also get a new name.
Naming rights are currently being negotiated with a party that was not named publicly at the council meeting.
