An evening celebrating the High Prairie Air Cadet Squadron’s successful season was enjoyed by all June 2.

“Have you ever seen such a sharper group of cadets?” asked Evelyn Hutchings, Northwest Wing Director, Air Cadet League of Canada.

“I’ve been marveling at your boots all evening!”

Her short address summed up the evening well. Hutchings, who attended to present a five-year bar and rosette to W.O. II Kathleen Gillmor, was one of many to praise the work of the cadets.

The evening included marches, drills, awards and speeches to recognize a successful year. Reviewing Officer Murray Couch received the honour of inspecting the squadron. He has literally seen thousands of cadets during his day.

“I got to say I’m really impressed,” said Couch. “That was a good show. I congratulate you on a good show.”

Before his speech, the cadets marched for the audience for well over 15 minutes. The audience was told the squadron placed sixth of 16 teams at a competition in Edmonton.

“Your drill is good,” added Couch. “Your dress is really good.”

Couch urged all cadets to return to the program next year and “bring a friend”. He also wished graduating cadet Keana Duchesneau the best of luck at university next fall.

“Everything you’ve learned here will help you down the road,” said Couch.

He concluded by thanking and recognizing all leaders, sponsors and parents.

High Prairie Legion president Don Ebbett addressed the squadron.

“I have a soft spot in my heart for the squadron,” he said. “They are dear to my heart. Well done, well done!”

And he promised the Legion would continue sponsorship of the program, which just concluded for the 64th straight year.

Lieut. Dan Gillmor also praised the cadets and paid tribute to his staff for an excellent year. He spoke about the squadron’s motto to be “prepared” and said the drills and dress witnessed during the evening was the result of that work.

“To the cadets, thank you. Thank you for your part in all aspects of the program. Your hard work – teamwork – led to your success.”

For many cadets, the year is not over. They will be attending camps and special training during the summer.

The regular cadet program resumes in the fall.
