The Smoky River Minor Hockey Association’s midget team hosted a tournament during January 12-13, and Coach Michel Maisonneuve was pleased with the event.

“It was a very successful tournament,” he says, adding it was the first in several years.

“The calibre of hockey exceeded my expectations.”

Joining the SMRHA midget team were the Hay River Huskies, High Prairie Legionnaires, La Crete Lumberjacks, Peace River midget team and the Sexsmith Vipers. The teams were divided into two pools for round robin play, which was held on January 12.

The Smoky River midgets, the Peace River midgets, and the La Crete Lumberjacks comprised Pool A.

The High Prairie Legionnaires, Sexsmith Vipers and Hay River Huskies comprised Pool B.

The semi-finals, consolation game and championship game were held in the morning of January 13.

The Peace River midgets faced the Hay River Huskies in the first semi-final game. The Huskies won that game by a score of 5-2 and advanced to the championship game.

The High Prairie Legionnaires and La Crete Lumberjacks faced off in the next semi-final game.

The Legionnaires won their game 5-3 and advanced to the championship game as well.

The Smoky River midgets and the Sexsmith Vipers played the consolation game in the early afternoon. The local team won that game by a score of 5-3.

It was the High Prairie Legionnaires facing off against the Hay River Huskies in the championship game after that.

The Huskies were the team to beat, as they demonstrated a spirited determination throughout the game, as they had throughout the tournament.

The Huskies were ahead by a score of 3-2 as the third period was ending. However, in the last two minutes of play, the Legionnaires pulled their goalie and put an extra attacker on the ice.

The Legionnaires were rewarded for their efforts, as they tied the game 3-3 with just over a minute remaining, resulting in a five-minute overtime period.

That period, too, didn’t produce a winner, so they went to a shootout, which the Legionnaires won. The Legionnaires took home a large Bluetooth speaker as their reward.
