The track-and-field season is here, and GPV Coach Marion Lessard is getting her 25 athletes ready for the competition.

Due to the extended winter weather, the team doesn’t have as much time to train. So Lessard has them on the field twice a week and she has set her sights high for the team.

“It would be nice to win the divisional banner,” says Lessard. “Hopefully, six students will qualify for provincials.”

Some students will be competing in the 100-, 200-, 400-, 800-, 1,500- and 3,000-metre sprints. Others are training for the javelin, shot-put, discus, high trump, triple jump and long jump.

The team has a very busy schedule for the rest of the month.

They will go to the divisionals in High Prairie on May 16, then they travel to Grande Prairie May 25-26 for the zones. Those that make the final cut will go to provincials in Red Deer during June 1-2.
